Skin cancer is the most common group of cancers worldwide, and with summer in full swing, it is a timely reminder of just how vital it is to look after our skin. At HRW OR:BIT, we are launching a new series focused on Skin Cancer Awareness, exploring the latest data and what it means for patients, healthcare professionals and the industry. In our first feature, Liz shares insights into the rising rates of melanoma and the ongoing impact of UV exposure. Melanoma on the Rise Melanoma is now the 17th most common cancer globally, with around 331,722 new cases and nearly 58,667 deaths reported in 2022 alone. And the numbers are continuing to climb. • In 2025, the US is expected to see over 212,000 melanoma diagnoses, including more than 104,000 invasive cases • Melanoma rates have increased by 42 percent over the past decade • Sadly, 8,430 people are projected to lose their lives to melanoma this year The Role of UV Exposure One of the most striking facts is that around 85 percent of melanomas are linked to UV exposure from the sun. It is a risk factor that is largely preventable, yet still underestimated, especially during the summer months when sun exposure is at its peak. Who Is Most at Risk • 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70 • Incidence rates are highest in Australia, New Zealand, Northern Europe and North America, and much lower in Africa and Asia. • In most regions, men are more likely to be diagnosed with melanoma than women • Non melanoma skin cancers are even more common, with over 1.2 million new cases and 69,416 deaths globally in 2022.
