Alzheimer’s Disease continues to present complex challenges across diagnosis, treatment and patient support. As the healthcare landscape evolves, several key themes are emerging that could shape the future of care and improve outcomes for patients and providers alike.

HRW Synapse, our in-house specialist neuroscience team, have identified three key insights for Alzheimer’s Disease that were shared at this year’s EAN Congress, alongside a subconscious behavioural theme uncovered by HRW Shift, our in-house behavioural science experts.

Reducing Time for Diagnosis

Alzheimer’s pathology begins decades before symptoms appear, yet 50% of patients are only diagnosed at moderate or advanced stages. This delay limits access to emerging treatments like LEQEMBI, which are most effective in early disease. Accelerating diagnosis is critical to enable timely intervention, improve care planning, and potentially slow disease progression before significant cognitive decline occurs.

Blood-Based Biomarkers and Diagnostic Tools

There is growing momentum behind the use of blood-based biomarkers – such as p-Tau217 – to support earlier and more accessible diagnosis in primary care. These tools, alongside improved access to MRI and PET imaging, can help identify AD in its preclinical or mild cognitive impairment stages. Earlier detection through non-invasive, cost effective methods could transform the diagnostic landscape and reduce reliance on invasive CSF testing.

Training Primary Care Physicians

Primary care physicians play a pivotal role in recognising the early signs of Alzheimer’s Disease. Ensuring they are equipped with the right training and tools is essential to improving early intervention and guiding patients towards appropriate care pathways.

Subconscious Behavioural Theme: Health Literacy

Health literacy is defined as “the knowledge and skills a person has to access, understand and evaluate health information to make decisions about their health.” Improving health literacy across populations can empower individuals to seek help earlier, understand their options and engage more actively in their care.
